Music Lessons

I was fortunate enough to have some wonderful music teachers in my youth, and I am passionate about passing on their wisdom. The piano is my first love and is a great first instrument at any age, and for most students I would recommend starting with the piano. I also offer tuition in guitar and singing.

My lessons include a solid grounding in music theory no matter the instrument. My role is to guide students toward a lifelong understanding and appreciation of music.

“Emily’s knowledge of music is second to none.”

She is able to communicate the most complicated ideas in the simplest of ways. The five years of lessons I had with Emily helped spark a lifelong passion for playing and creating music.

“We would not hesitate to endorse Emily as a music tutor.”

All three of our children undertook music tuition from Emily in the past three years. Our eldest, guided by Emily’s extensive theoretical knowledge and gigging experience, developed as a singer and as a songwriter and was able to perform, and successfully compete, regionally.

“She has transformed me as a musician.”

No words can describe how much I love Emily! I would not be where I am today without her singing, songwriting, ukulele, and piano tuition. Her teaching style is so supportive: she listens, encourages, and she’s so kind and fun.

FAQs

  • I offer 30min lessons for $30, or 45min lessons for $50 for more advanced students.

    The first lesson is free.

After that, lessons are billed per term, to be paid no later than the date of the last lesson for the term. You can pay in lump sum, in parts, or by setting up a weekly payment.

  • Any student's first lesson is free of charge, and I encourage a parent to attend when possible. This is a good chance for me to get to know your child and their goals and abilities, and for you to ensure that I will be the right teacher for your child.

  • You can learn to play an instrument at any age, though in general I recommend children begin piano at 7 or above, and guitar and 9 or above. I have had pianists start as young as 4, so this is very individual! I encourage younger children interested in guitar to start with the ukulele to build up the fine motor skills they will need for their instrument. Singers can begin at any age, but will get the most value out of formal lessons (other than enjoyment!) at about age 9 and above.
